Textbook Rental: 3 Great Reasons To Rent Textbooks Instead of Buying

Textbook rental has only become popular in past few years. The web has provided enough of a market for it to work well, and it has taken off. Using textbook rental, you can save substantial cash on your textbooks, and you can avoid keeping used textbooks.

Check out these great reasons to try it.

How Textbook Rental Benefits You

1. Save Money on Textbooks: Like buying cheap used college textbooks, but rental costs even you even less. The companies that offer rental books have more than one term to make their money.

While you will move on to higher level classes - hopefully you passed your class! The rental company will turn that book around to another student and get another fee out of it. The company can do this 2-3 times per year, but only for about 1-2 years before the university replaces the book with a new edition. Still, rental costs significantly less than new, and somewhat less than used.

2. Save Time: At the end of classes when you finish with the book, you just mail it back. Usually, the company will provide you with a mailing label, so you don’t even need to wait in line. Less hassle, less time waiting in line for textbook buyback at your university.

I don’t know about you, but after finishing a semester, I wanted to leave as soon as I could. Twice I did that to travel in Mexico, which I highly recommend ;)

The point: you don’t want to mess with textbooks after school if you can avoid it. I love Amazon, Half.com, and eBay for selling used textbooks, but I like this system just as much - you save money up front, and you don’t have to wait for a buyer after the class.

3. No Guessing: when I have sold textbooks, I had to guess at the price I offered. I am sure I have sold low in some cases. In one case, the book wouldn’t sell . I still have this boat anchor - I mean thoughtful textbook - on my shelf as I write this.

With a rental book, you have no guessing. You rent the book, you get your savings up front, and after class you mail it back. I know sometimes the guessing would keep me from listing that book for a week. No more.

Textbook Rental Works...

Seriously, check on your books and see if it will help you. You can even try it with friends that have a jillion reference books. Maybe you could rent the textbook for your English class or for physics instead of buying it, and help your friend out with a little cash.
